INTASC.10.A
K: The teacher understands schools as organizations within the larger community context and understands the operations of the relevant aspects of the system(s) within which s/he works.
INTASC.10.B
K: The teacher understands how factors in the students' environment outside of school (e.g. family circumstances, community environments, health and economic conditions) may influence students' life and learning.

Reflect


My Resource Directory represents INTASC Standard 10.B.K. This collection of ten different resources shows how I understand that the school needs these different communities and resources to function and that they are vital to children’s education. This collection of resources ranges from homeless support, to foster support, to special need support. It is vital that as teachers we understand that children come to school from all walks of life and all have different needs. My Public Policy letter represents INTASC Standard 10.C.K. This letter shows how I realize that, as I said earlier that children are coming to school from different walks of life and need me, as a future teacher to be aware of their situations and look out for their best interests. By being an advocate in my school I can make sure that my students, from all bases of need, are being taken care of and are not alone.


Project

My philosophy of education has come a long way. I would have never thought that I would have put child advocate in the job description of a teacher when I started my education three years ago but today I do not know how teachers are who they are without it. Teachers need to be out there on the front lines of education and child issues and bettering children’s social conditions. Who better to be out there fighting for children than an educator, someone who has been well educated in everything about young people? How can we put ourselves in a job of teaching and care for young people if we are not interested in their lives outside of the institutional walls of school? I, when I become a teacher, will never stop care for the needs of children and never stop noticing the community which my school is within. Children are products of their environment, I strongly believe, so it would be in my best interest to understand and stand up for the betterment of that environment.
